Cultural Awareness & Community Engagement

In both Somali and Mexican cultures, greetings are an essential part of daily life and reflect deep-rooted values of respect and connection. In Somali communities, the phrase "Soo Dhawoow"—meaning “Welcome”—exemplifies the warmth and hospitality that define social interaction. Similarly, in Mexican culture, it is customary to greet each individual personally, often with a handshake or a light kiss on the cheek among friends. Expressions such as “¡Bienvenido!” and “¿Cómo estás?” show a sincere interest in the well-being of others, reinforcing the importance of personal relationships.

We also offer culturally informed services that reflect and respect the traditions of our Somali and Mexican residents. Recognizing the importance of religious practice, we provide designated prayer spaces that offer privacy and cleanliness for daily use. We honor key cultural and religious holidays such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha for our Muslim and Somali tenants, and Día de los Muertos and Las Posadas for our Mexican tenants. These celebrations are marked with community events that create opportunities for connection and shared experience.

Representation within our staffing and vendor partnerships is another vital part of our commitment to inclusivity. When property teams and service providers reflect the cultural and demographic makeup of the communities they serve, it builds trust and strengthens relationships. Tenants are more likely to feel seen, heard, and respected when interacting with individuals who share similar cultural backgrounds. This representation also enhances our ability to understand and respond to local needs, ensuring services are not only accessible but also culturally relevant and responsive.

Language Access & Equitable Services

Our organization is committed to ensuring equitable access to housing services for all tenants, regardless of their primary language. We have developed a comprehensive Language Access Plan that supports clear communication and inclusivity. This includes bilingual staff members fluent in Somali and Spanish who are trained to assist with document interpretation, answer questions, and provide support during appointments. These staff members undergo language proficiency evaluations to ensure high-quality assistance.

In addition, all team members receive training on how to use interpretation tools such as "I Speak" cards and access interpreter services, so they can effectively meet the needs of our diverse tenant community. By prioritizing language accessibility, we work to remove communication barriers and empower tenants to fully engage with the resources and support available to them.
